Is there a Dr Onboard? How to help during an inflight medical emergency

Description

This course is designed for Doctors who are willing to provide medical assistance on a commercial aircraft when a passenger or crew member becomes unwell.

This course will cover all aspects of the inflight medical event, and provide key knowledge on altitude physiology and consequences of altitude on many conditions, how to assist using their clinical skills and to understand onboard procedures, the types of medical equipment carried, the use of a ground based medical provider, legal liability, documentation and reporting and much more.

The aim is to increase the willingness and confidence of the clinicians when in a unique and unfamiliar environment to that of their day to day in volunteering to assist the cabin crew when a passenger or crew member becomes sick or injured during flight.

The training is aimed at reducing diversions of an aircraft due to a medical emergency based on sound clinical reasoning and operational decision making ensuring the best possible health outcomes for patients.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Be able to describe the aircraft and cabin environments
  2. Understand the various regulations pertaining to commercial airlines and pilot decision making and responsibilities
  3. Be able to explain differences between aircraft types, size, number of passengers carried and flight length capabilities
  4. Understand and apply the laws of altitude physiology to medical conditions in flight
  5. Understand cabin crew responsibilities and airline operational constraints including impact of inflight diversions
  6. Understand the occurrence of medical events and types of common inflight medical conditions that may be experienced when assisting
  7. Be aware of the types of medical kits and equipment that may be carried by a commercial airline
  8. Be familiar with the use and role of the ground based medical provider
  9. Understand the role of the MQV and legal liability risk and proof of qualifications and experience.
