Rotation flaps

Description

The course is divided into two detailed units, offering comprehensive insights into the principles and practice of rotation flaps.

Unit 1: Foundations of Rotation Flap Design
This unit explores the fundamental principles of rotation flaps:
  • Planning and Design: Learn to calculate the arc of rotation and determine pivot points using geometric principles tailored to defect size and location
  • Applications: Understand the use of traditional rotation flaps and O-Z modifications for closures in high-tension areas like the scalp and temple, leveraging skin tension lines for optimal outcomes
  • Clinical Anatomy: Gain a deep understanding of anatomical considerations, including blood supply, nerve preservation, and maintaining function in regions like the face and extremities.

Unit 2: Practical Demonstrations and Advanced Techniques
This unit emphasises real-world application through hands-on demonstrations:

  • Surgical Execution: Watch step-by-step videos of rotation flap procedures, including the marking, excision, mobilisation, and closure of defects
  • Complex Cases: Address challenging scenarios such as large defects, tight scalp closures, and overlapping lesions using advanced techniques like double rotation flaps
  • Management of Tension and Dog Ears: Learn to reduce tension and address length discrepancies using Burow’s triangles, dermal sutures, and strategic trimming
  • Multiflap Techniques: Explore the use of dual rotation flaps and O-Z flaps for midline or large defects, ensuring effective distribution of tissue and minimal tension on closure
  • This course combines theoretical insights with practical expertise, enabling participants to execute rotation flaps confidently and achieve superior functional and cosmetic results in skin cancer surgery.

Learning Outcomes

  1. Evaluate the need for careful surgery techniques using direct closure, flaps, wedges and graft repair
  2. Determine the principles of flap surgery and classification of skin flaps
  3. Plan rotation flaps and their modifications
  4. Determine the correct steps for closures of scalp, cheek, dorsum of hand and lower limb defects with rotation flaps.
