Dementia - Stages and Management

Description

The Dementia – Stages and Management course is a detailed guide designed for healthcare professionals working with patients affected by dementia. Through six well-structured units, the course explores the complexities of dementia, from diagnosis to advanced care strategies.

Unit 1: Dementia Facts and Figures
This unit introduces the basics of dementia, defining it as a syndrome that affects cognitive and physical functions. It outlines key dementia types such as Alzheimer's, vascular dementia, and Lewy bodies, and discusses their prevalence and impact. The module highlights the growing burden of dementia, particularly in aging populations, and the increasing demand for effective management strategies.

Unit 2: Stages of and Diagnosing Dementia
In this unit, participants will learn about the different stages of dementia, ranging from early to severe. The unit outlines how these stages affect treatment planning and decision-making. It also covers diagnostic methods, including cognitive function tests, imaging, and biomarker tests, and the importance of distinguishing between dementia, delirium, and depression.

Unit 3: Non-Pharmacological Management of BPSD
This unit focuses on the non-pharmacological approaches to managing Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia (BPSD). Participants will explore strategies such as structured activity plans, music therapy, exercise, and aromatherapy. These interventions, which are the first line of treatment, aim to reduce the reliance on medications and improve the quality of life for patients.

Unit 4: Pharmacotherapy, Immunotherapy, and Ultrasound Therapy for Severe BPSD
This unit covers the use of pharmacological treatments in severe cases of BPSD. It explains the risks and benefits of antipsychotics, SSRIs, and other medications used to manage symptoms like hallucinations, aggression, and depression. The module also introduces emerging therapies such as immunotherapy and ultrasound therapy.

Unit 5: Managing Physical Co-Morbidities of Dementia and Palliative Care
This unit addresses the common physical comorbidities in dementia patients, including vision impairment, weight loss, and seizures. It highlights the role of the GP in managing these conditions and emphasizes the importance of a palliative care approach. Participants will learn how to provide advanced care planning and support for both patients and their families.

Unit 6: Prevention of Dementia
The final unit explores the risk factors associated with dementia, including both genetic and environmental influences. It discusses modifiable factors like cardiovascular health, diet, physical activity, and sleep, and outlines prevention strategies to reduce the likelihood of developing dementia.

This course is ideal for healthcare professionals looking to enhance their ability to diagnose, manage, and support patients with dementia throughout its progression.
