The course is divided into two comprehensive units, each designed to enhance skills in excision and suturing techniques:
Unit 1: Ellipses and Suture Techniques Revisited In this unit, participants will learn the fundamentals of excision planning, focusing on the importance of resting skin tension lines (RSTL) and how to create ellipses for excision. The course covers the anatomy of areas commonly involved in skin cancer surgery and explains different variants of the ellipse, such as S-plasty and M-plasty, to minimize skin wastage and avoid complications like dog ears. Participants will also learn to adapt excisions based on skin laxity, surrounding anatomy, and cosmetic considerations.
Unit 2: Dog Ear Correction and Suture Demonstration This practical unit focuses on refining suture techniques and managing post-excision irregularities like dog ears. Participants will observe demonstrations on how to perform a variety of suture types, including continuous, vertical mattress, and subcuticular sutures, on pork belly, allowing them to understand the application of each technique in different surgical contexts. The unit also emphasizes knot tying and ensuring proper closure for both dermal and epidermal layers, crucial for minimizing scar formation and achieving a successful aesthetic outcome.
Presented by Dr. Victor Harling, this course provides a blend of theoretical learning and practical demonstrations to equip healthcare professionals with the skills needed to perform precise and effective excisions and sutures in skin cancer surgery.
