In this seminar, Associate Professor Wayne Morriss, President of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA), addresses on some of the global realities anaesthesiologists face in enhancing patient care. While the core issues remain consistent with those before the pandemic, their urgency has significantly intensified in the current healthcare landscape. These realities comprise the impact of COVID-19, the post COVID priorities and the World Health Organisation (WHO) advocacy.

Learning Outcomes

1. Analyse the role of the World Federation of Societies of Anesthesiologists (WFSA) in shaping healthcare practices and policies.
2. Explain the concept of Universal Health Coverage (UHC) as defined by the World Health Organisation (WHO), along with the critical issues of lack of access to safe anaesthesia or safe care by billions of people. 
3. Identify and discuss some of the current priority topics in anaesthesiology: (a) the impact of covid-19 on the progress of UHC and the pressures on the wellbeing of the healthcare workforce; (b) the key components WFSA Strategic Plan 2023-2028, focusing on education, advocacy, and collaboration; (c) the importance of WHO advocacy urging governments to uphold their commitments to UHC; (d) the importance of the World Congress of Anaesthesiologists in funding projects and creating global connections.
