What Goes Where, and Why: Topical Corticosteroids and Dermatoses

Description

Topical corticosteroids (TCS) are used widely for a number of skin presentations including atopic eczema and psoriasis. Safe and effective use relies on a knowledge of appropriate potency for both the condition and the body site affected, optimal vehicle for the TCS, appropriate duration of use and fingertip unit dosing and ensuring timely review. Working through cases, the learner will develop and refine that knowledge and have the opportunity to have questions answered by a subject matter expert.

Learning Outcomes

  1. List relative potencies of different TCS preparations and factors affecting absorption
  2. Describe optimal vehicle for the TCS according to body site affected
  3. Describe appropriate fingertip unit dosing for different parts of the body
  4. Determine the optimal potency TCS for different parts of the body
  5. Describe appropriate duration and review of treatment with a TCS to minimize risk of adverse effects.
