Skin Deep: Skin Cancers and Suture Workshop

This full-day workshop will include a morning of lectures and interactive Q&A by a multidisciplinary team of specialists: dermatologist, oncologists, pathologists and surgeons who have special interest in the diagnosis & management of skin cancers.

Pre/Post activity
A workbook will be provided with questions supplied from all presenters, of the 'take home messages' and essential information that need to be understood. This workbook will ask participants to answer and review questions that makes them consider the information presented by the educators and then formulate an answer.

  • Chemoprophylaxis and Non-Surgical Management of Skin Lesions
  • Skin Cancer Dermatology & MOH Surgery
  • Role of Laser in Treatment of Skin Lesions
  • Skin Cancer Histopathology
  • Immunotherapy Treatments for Skin cancers
  • Indications for radiotherapy in the management of skin cancers
  • Fundamentals of periocular skin cancers
  • The Latest Updates in Melanoma Management
  • Scar Management and Minimisation
  • Medicolegal Pitfalls in Skin Cancer Practice  

The afternoon will be a hands-on suturing workshop with specialist plastic surgeons. There will be two concurrent workshops:

  • Fundamentals: this is a suturing workshop focussed on finessing the techniques that plastic surgeons use to minimise scarring and maximise wound closure. This workshop will be concentrating on excisions, dermal sutures, epidermal techniques including subcuticular sutures, and other repair techniques used in skin cancer surgery such as basic flaps.
  • Advanced: this is a suturing workshop for those who have already had a broad experience in skin cancer surgery, and already have well-established fundamental skills. The focus will be on complex flap designs in difficult areas with possible pitfalls. There will also be an opportunity to learn how to perform a full thickness skin graft, including donor site management and strategies to maximise graft take.

Learning objectives:

The learning objectives for the morning lectures covers clinical knowledge of Skin Cancers:

  1. Diagnosis and recognition of skin cancers using Dermoscopy
  2. The role of surgery in skin cancer treatment, such as MOHS and Frozen Section
  3. Skin lesions that can be treated by laser
  4. Eyelid lesions and management options by oculoplastic surgeons
  5. A better understanding of immunotherapy and radiation in skin cancer treatment
  6. The current protocol and guidelines for melanoma management
  7. Use of medicare item numbers for skin lesions
  8. Understand good clinical practice in skin cancer management and the pitfalls where patient care could fall below the standard of care.

The afternoon learning objectives include procedure skills:

  1. The basic techniques in suturing to achieve good wound healing and scarring
  2. Understanding the principles of flap repair and grafts with their pitfalls
  3. Application of principles of safe tissue handling
  4. How to handle surgical instruments effectively and safely.
