ACAM Aesthetic Medicine Workshop

Course Overview

The aim of the workshop is to introduce participants to a range of modern technology and treatment modalities that they may offer patients for common skin diseases that present in general practice. Taking an integrated and holistic approach, participants review skin diseases and concerns that present in practice (an estimated 80% of general practice patients will present to their doctor with some form of skin disorder that causes cosmetic concern in their lifetime). Examples include: acne, rosacea and sun-damaged skin.

Participants will review facial and neck anatomy, topical treatment aids, consent and medico-legal concepts as they apply to aesthetic medicine, treatment options (chemical peels for the treatment of active acne and scarring for example) and laser and light devices used in skin medicine to remediate skin diseases, scarring and sun-damage.


Learning Outcomes

  1. Discuss the differing requirements within a consultation to diagnose the cosmetic presentation of skin disease
  2. Identify skin conditions which are appropriate for General Practitioners to treat in a general practice setting
  3. Identify the different options available to best assist patients within the spheres of skin remediation identifying mental health disorders (body dysmorphic syndrome)
  4. Identify patients who are psychologically unsuitable for treatment
  5. Identify the appropriate aesthetic medicine and treatment resources to address patient's clinical concerns; manage sub optimal outcomes; and recognize the diversity of skills required appropriately treat patient's concerns
  6. Demonstrate a knowledge of infection prevention and control for in room procedures and treatment options
  7. Able to implement processes to manage cosmetic medicine adverse events and chemical spills
  8. Appreciate the necessary Medico-legal requirements to consent a patient including adverse events and review Medical Defence Insurance to ensure it covers procedures offered by the practitioner.
