The Prevention and Early Detection of Skin Cancer in General Practice

Description

This six-hour online activity will guide GPs and other health professionals through the epidemiology of skin cancers in Australia, skin cancer prevention and UV, along with the diagnosis and management of skin cancers.  

This course is divided into three modules. Each module will take approximately two hours to complete. Eight weeks (60 days) from the day of registration (start date) has been allotted by Cancer Council Victoria to complete this course.  Ensure to download any materials you may wish to save and access your certificate prior to the eight weeks timeframe.  Cancer Council Victoria course content will no longer be available after 90 days from the registration date.

 

 


Details

Module 1 - Biopsy techniques, skin cancer prevention and vitamin D

  • Discuss the incidence of sun related skin cancers in Australia.
  • Describe the link between UV exposure and the development of skin cancer.
  • Describe the key messages regarding balance between avoiding excessive sun exposure to reduce the risk of skin cancer and maintaining vitamin D levels.
  • Recall the various methods and techniques used to biopsy skin.
  • State the key features in the diagnosis and management of in situ Keratinocyte Tumours.
  • Ensure patient safety by recalling the methods of examination to detect skin cancer.

Module 2 - Diagnosis and management of non-melanoma skin cancer

  • Discuss the key features in the diagnosis and management of basal cell carcinoma.
  • Discuss the key features in the diagnosis and management of squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Recall the indications for referral of patient with basal and squamous cell carcinomas.
  • State the key features in the diagnosis and management of basal and squamous cell carcinomas.
  • Ensure patient safety by recalling the methods of examination to detect skin cancer.

Module 3 - Diagnosis and treatment of melanoma

  • Discuss the incidence of melanoma in Australia.
  • Describe the most common sites on the body where melanoma may develop.
  • Recall the ABCD method of assessment of melanoma.
  • State the key features in the management of melanoma.
  • Ensure patient safety by recalling the methods of examination to melanoma.
